This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Sears Holdings Associate Gospel Choir! The group began as a holiday choir back in 1991 when an informal group of associates got together to sing Christmas carols. Since then, the Gospel Choir has represented the company by performing around the U.S. in support of Sears Holdings’ community engagement efforts.
This week we had the chance to sit down with the founding member, executive choir director and Senior Office Assistant in the Legal department, Jeffrey Lomax, to find out more about our beloved choir.
What is the mission of the Sears Holdings Associate Gospel Choir?
The mission of the Gospel Choir is to communicate a venerated message through gospel music. Our objective is to reinforce that we’re part of the communities where we work and live and strengthen the ties between SHC and its local neighborhoods. As such, the Gospel Choir creates a sense of pride for all SHC associates.
What is the Choir most grateful for over the past 25 years?
Through all the experiences and challenges of being a workplace Gospel Choir, we have become a family over the years. We’ve experienced the joy of welcoming new members and the mixed emotions of losing members. The choir is made up of a diverse group of hourly and salaried associates, retirees and community members. We are so grateful that Sears Holdings allows our members to continue to participate as volunteers. These faithful members still come out and support our great company.
The Choir has been fortunate to travel across the U.S. representing Sears Holdings. What has been your favorite performance to date?
All of our performances have touched us in one way or another. Over the past 25 years, we’ve been blessed to perform locally and nationally at Sears and Kmart stores, nursing homes, prisons, homeless shelters and the White House. Recently we had the pleasure of representing SHC at the 2016 Congressional Black Caucus Community Breakfast in Washington, D.C. We provided the music and chose the theme, “It Will Get Better” to encourage people everywhere that despite all the things that are going on in the world around us, it will get better!

Can you share a fun fact people may not know about the Sears Holding Associate Gospel Choir?
In 2001, we recorded a CD entitled “Songs of Celebration.” The live recording was produced at our corporate office in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. To our surprise, we sold over 30,000 copies in our stores! We were also featured in two nationally televised TV commercials for Sears – “Let Your Light Shine” for Black History Month and “Singing for Joy” for Christmas. We were so honored to participate in both commercials.

Thank you to Jeffrey Lomax and the Sears Associate Gospel Choir for 25 years of service to the company and to the community!
