In collaboration with the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago, Sears Holdings’ Associate Resource Group, Women in Leadership and Development, recently hosted members of TechGYRLS. TechGYRLS is a multi-week project-based learning program for girls 9 – 14 years-old that provides opportunities for exploration in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
Over the course of four weeks, SHC associate volunteers and YWCA instructors taught the girls the computer-aided design program, Sketch-Up. To put their new skills to the test, the girls took a field trip to our corporate headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
They started their day with a tour of our Kenmore Design Studio and Merchandise Review Center where the Kenmore Industrial Design team provided the girls with an overview of the ideation and conceptualization that goes into the product development process through quick-sketching techniques. The girls were each given a sketch journal to spark creativity as they learned how to draw basic shapes using perspective drawing techniques. They were then challenged to use their new skills to create a toaster design which they presented at the end of the day.
