With the arrival of flu season it’s time to protect you and your family against the virus to stay healthy throughout the peak flu months. We sat down with Phil Keough, President of Kmart Pharmacy, to discuss how to prevent catching the flu and how Kmart Pharmacy and its team of professionally trained immunizing pharmacists are ready to administer flu shots as well as other CDC-recommended vaccinations.
As a pharmacist, what preventative measures do you recommend taking to avoid the flu?
The best way to keep you and your family healthy this season is to get a flu shot. Of course, I recommend going to a Kmart Pharmacy, where our pharmacists are immunization-certified and ready to administer flu shots, along with other vaccinations recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).1
How much does it cost to get a flu shot from the Kmart Pharmacy?
Kmart is now offering no-cost flu shots (with most insurance)2 to customers at participating Kmart Pharmacy locations. We also offer Quadravalent and high-dose flu shots. No appointment is necessary and Shop Your Way® Pharmacy Rewards members receive credit for each flu shot purchased.3
When is the best time to get a flu shot?
The CDC recommends people start getting the flu vaccine soon after it becomes available. I’m proud to point out that once again this year, Kmart Pharmacy was one of the first to market with flu shots in mid-August. While flu shot administration peaks in September and October when the weather starts changing, flu season continues through January and February. We will continue giving shots until the late winter months.
What sets Kmart Pharmacy apart from other pharmacies?
Simply put, it’s our pharmacists and technicians. They truly care about the well-being of our members and do their very best to provide information and advice on health and wellness.
How are you spreading the word to keep the flu from spreading?
Promoting flu shots is an important part of our health and wellness initiatives. Creating a marketing campaign featuring our disruptive flu bug helps grab members’ attention in-store. Not only do we want to help our members lead healthier lives, but we also want to introduce Kmart Pharmacy to members who may be getting their prescriptions elsewhere. We truly believe that our pharmacists will impress members enough to make the switch. They’re personable, approachable and professional, and take great pride in providing service with a healthy dose of care.
What are some common misconceptions about the flu vaccine?
We conducted an online survey4 of Kmart shoppers and found that approximately one in three people (31 percent) typically do not get a flu shot because they believe the vaccine won’t protect them. In reality, the flu vaccine is intended to create a stronger immune system to keep you from catching the bug, and also lessens the chances of spreading the flu virus to others.
What about those who never get the flu? Would they need a flu shot?
Flu season is here and the fact is no one is immune from getting the flu. Some individuals are actually more susceptible to developing serious flu-related complications than others, including children under the age of five, adults age 65 or older, and pregnant women. Everyone should get a flu shot. The vaccine helps protect others around you.
Many people will try to go to work despite potentially having the flu virus. Why is it so important to stay home and away from others when you’re ill?
If you were to contract the contagious flu virus, there is a chance you could infect your family, your friends and your co-workers. More than half of the respondents to our survey (55 percent) said they have missed work themselves or know someone who missed work last year due to the flu. Sick employees are likely not working at an optimum level and can expose others to germs in the workplace. The end result is costly to both employees and employers.
What if I’m unable to get to a neighborhood Kmart Pharmacy for a flu shot?
Kmart Pharmacy can host an on-site flu shot clinic at your company. Employers or organizations who want to schedule a clinic should reach out to their local Kmart Pharmacy. There is no additional cost above the flu shots themselves.
We are currently offering no-cost flu clinics (with most insurance plans) for our associates and covered dependents at the Sears Holdings campus in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The Kmart Pharmacy team is visiting every Tuesday through early November to provide associates with a convenient way to get a flu shot, in addition to other immunizations. We enjoy offering this benefit and making it easy for our associates to protect themselves against the flu virus this season.
2 No co-payment unless required by your plan. Cash price of the Trivalent flu shot is $27.99.
