While their team is in the midst of another playoff run, Chicago second baseman Javier Baez and catchers Rene Rivera and Victor Caratini are keeping thoughts of their native Puerto Rico top-of-mind as the island continues recovery and rebuilding efforts in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
The three players have family on the island and are committed to support their community in its recovery. They recently launched a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $35,000 for the hurricane victims.
Shop Your Way supports and applauds their efforts. On Wednesday at the Northside ballpark, Shop Your Way, a business unit of Sears Holdings and the free social shopping destination and rewards program for Sears and Kmart, announced that it is supporting the players’ ongoing Puerto Rico relief efforts by donating more than 25,000 Chicago Cubs t-shirts, sweatshirts and other apparel items that will be provided to local charities on the island, including those in the players’ hometowns of Bayamon (Baez and Rivera) and Coamo (Caratini).
Baez, Rivera and Caratini recorded a couple videos about the donation.
Shop Your Way, Sears and Kmart have seen first-hand the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria. The company’s thousands of dedicated associates on the island are working with private and public-sector partners to quickly restore their retail operations in Puerto Rico to provide fuel, power, Wi-Fi connection, water, food, medical and other essential goods to those impacted and help them recover and rebuild. In the nearly four weeks since the hurricane hit the island, Sears Holdings quickly restored 20 of its 21 Kmart stores and eight of its nine Sears stores.
The company is also introducing new and unique ways to support the island residents during this difficult period:
- The Shop Your Way team established “Zonas De Descanso” (Comfort Zones) at all open Sears and Kmart stores to provide members and customers an area to sit, charge their devices, enjoy air conditioning and allow their kids to play with toys and games.
- The company is also working to introduce Buy Online Pickup In-Store across the island. While many residents spent hours in line for gasoline, a helpful Kmart sales associate was able to take an “a-la-CAR” order of the most necessary items. The customer’s order was brought back to the store and ready for pick up and purchase within a few hours.
- Sears and Kmart are working to make shopping as simple as possible during these difficult times. While members are standing in line to enter stores, Sears and Kmart are providing canopies and fans as well as personal shoppers who allow them to take their time and assist them with their purchases.
- Shop Your Way established store pages and region pages on ShopYourWay.com that have links to relevant store information. Shop Your Way’s member care services team has been making personal phone calls to hundreds of members in the affected area, offering support and assistance where possible.
The recovery efforts in Puerto Rico will continue for the long-term. Shop Your Way, Sears and Kmart will be there to support these efforts – just like Baez, Rivera and Caratini.
