According to a report by the World Economic Forum, if we continue to produce and fail to properly dispose of plastics, these materials will outweigh fish pound for pound in the ocean by the year 2050! On Friday, Sept. 14, in recognition of National Clean Up Day, SHC associates devoted their time and energy to pick up litter and recyclables around the grounds of the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
Volunteers were given some background on how National Clean Up Day began, an overview of SHC’s corporate sustainability efforts and were educated on the importance of preserving our natural environment. The overview was followed by a knowledge check and fun exercise to see if they could correctly identify accepted items for recycling in their area. This was a great learning opportunity as many acknowledged they were not recycling accurately.
“Protecting the environment and inspiring our members and associates to do the same is important to us at Sears Holdings,” said Kristine Brune, director of environmental sustainability and green leadership. “We were thrilled to have partnered with the Village of Hoffman Estates and Midwest Sustainability Group to celebrate National Clean Up Day and are lucky to have passionate and dedicated associates who care about our environmental impact and want to protect our planet for future generations.”
Within two hours, a considerable amount of litter and recyclables were collected and diverted from the storm water system, aiding in the protection of the natural wildlife and beautifying the local community. Just think, if everyone picked up one piece of litter each day, how much cleaner and healthier this world would be!
The volunteers were encouraged to bring the information and their experiences back to their own communities to influence other’s behaviors.
Following the cleanup, several volunteers commented that this experience inspired them to be more conscious to recycle at work and at home. Thank you to the Village of Hoffman Estates and Midwest Sustainability Group who provided support and clean up materials and special kudos to all the volunteers who made a difference in our local community.
