On June 16, Sears and Kmart unveiled a new store-in-a-store. The historic Brooklyn-based Sears originally opened in 1929 now includes a 10,000 square foot Kmart store that has all those grab-and-go items for the busy city shopper, such as: groceries, health and beauty, pet supplies, snacks and drinks, cleaning supplies and more.
This integration makes the store a true one-stop shop and another example of the company’s transformation as Sears Holdings evaluates how to best serve members.
The grand opening ceremony kicked off with a ribbon cutting, cut by a local member who has been a loyal Sears customer since 1971. At store open, approximately 50 members were lined up to celebrate and see the newly remodeled store. Throughout the celebration over 500 customers stopped in. The family-friendly celebration offered members snacks and refreshments. The store hosted an ice cream truck, a face painter and a DJ. Swag bags that included gift cards were handed out to the first 200 members in the store. Additional gift cards were also raffled at two stations throughout the event. Select customers that signed up for an in-store personal shopping experience also received a gift card.
“We are always listening to our members to understand how we can better serve their needs. We feel like this store is a great location for this new concept”, says Chief Commercial Officer of Shop Your Way, B.J. Naedele. “It sits in the heart of Brooklyn and will be a great option for that busy city shopper. Our stores are integral to the local communities, so it’s only natural for us to find new and better ways to connect with our members while accelerating the transformation of our business.”
